| "The Gift" was
done as commission for a family here in Longmont, CO that had just lost
a baby in childbirth. My nephew Mark Allen Kinkel was born at
about
the same time with a fatal condition called Potter's Syndrome. He
died after taking just a few breaths. Creating this sculpture
became
a very cathartic and therapeutic experience for me. Since there
really
aren't many reference resources for a new born I used what I had
closest.
My own son was just a few months old so I'd hold him in my hands as the
design shows and he became my model. This life-size bronze
continues
to be one of my most moving and popular compositions. |
